A Sumter man spent time in the Clarendon County Detention Center over the weekend after passing a Manning Police Department safety checkpoint and then running from police when confronted. Edward Allen McCoy, 50, of 550 Old Manning Road in Sumter, was charged about 11:49 p.m. Friday with driving under suspension near the intersection of East Boyce and Barfield streets. According to reports, McCoy passed the safety checkpoint set in front of Sparrow and Kennedy on East Boyce Street, got out of his car and then stared at officers before running toward the woods on foot. "Officers pursued the subject and were able to catch him without incident," reports state. McCoy told police that he only ran because he did not have a license and he was supposed to be getting it back Monday. Reports did not indicate why his license was suspended.
