Daniel Eric Barnett, 66, a longtime resident of Manning, died peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, in Medina, Ohio.

Born April 3, 1948, in Akron, Ohio, he was a son of Phyllis Barnett and the late Charles Barnett. "Digger," as he was known, grew up on a farm in Granger, Ohio, but spent the last 15 years in South Carolina as an excavator clearing land. He loved to make people laugh and always had a joke to tell. He was also an avid sportsman who loved to fish and hunt. He graduated from Highland High School in 1967, lettering in football and wrestling. He proudly served two terms in the U.S. Army in the 1st Air Cavalry as a door gunner in the Vietnam War.

Survivors besides his mother include his loving daughter, Jessica (David) Ihrig; two granddaughters, Samantha and Katelyn Ihrig; two brothers, David (Maxine) Barnett and Dirk (Debbie) Barnett; and two sisters, Dianne (Dennis) Gerspacher and Darla Barnett-Ott.

Besides his father, Digger was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ohlen and Oran Kuhn and Andrew and Ruby O'Dear; and his companion and faithful dog, Minnie.

It was Dan's wish for no calling hours.

A celebration of the life of Daniel Eric Barnett will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014, at Granger United Methodist Church, 1235 Granger Road in Medina.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to Granger United Methodist Church; the Medina County SPCA; or the Medina Parks District.
