LMA ShieldThe Laurence Manning Academy Junior Varsity volleyball team picked up a win with two losses on Wednesday at home against Williamsburg Academy.

The scores were 26-24; 25-17; and 25-20. Ashton Rogers had 13 kills. Brooke Ward had nine kills. Sarah Collen had seven serve points.

OBITS-BACKGROUND-8-smallerThe Rev. Warren Hatcher, 72, died on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital in Charleston.

Born Jan. 26, 1942, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Frank and Mary Hatcher.

The family will receive friends and relatives at the home, 1118 M Hatcher Road in Pinewood.

Funeral arrangements for the Rev. Warren Hatcher will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.


Woman charged with shoplifting, trespassing

Crime-ReportsDenelle Ann Staton, 40, of 1058 Varner St. in Manning, was charged about 5:19 p.m. Saturday with shoplifting and trespassing after notice at a store in the 2000 block of Paxville Highway in Manning. According to reports from the Manning Police Department, Staton was identified by a loss prevention specialist with the store for allegedly taking $101 worth of merchandise without paying for it.

The store’s employee told police that Staton had placed the allegedly stolen items in several grocery bags and then attempted to leave the store without paying for them. The items included two cases of Bud Light … Read the rest

Sumter man gets enhanced shoplifting charge over laundry detergent

Crime-ReportsA 36-year-old man was charged Aug. 25 with shoplifting, third or subsequent offense, after allegedly taking a $9 package of laundry detergent without paying for it.

Ryan M. Watford of 520 Timmerman St. in Sumter was arrested about 6:40 p.m. at a store in the 2000 block of Paxville Highway after a loss prevention specialist told Manning Police that Watford had concealed the detergent under his clothes.

Watford’s prior record includes three pending shoplifting offenses in Sumter – one from Dec. 12, 2012, one from April 18, 2013, and another from Nov. 27, 2013. He pleaded guilty in 1996 to … Read the rest

Clarendon Hall volleyball team victorious against St. Francis Xavier

fleur-de-lis-red-mdClarendon Hall picked up its first varsity volleyball win of the season Tuesday, defeating St. Francis Xavier at Clarendon Hall 3-0 with scores of 25-9, 25-14, 25-17. Emily Brunson led the Saints with 18 points. Shannon Corbett had 15 points and Ava English added 14. The Saints will travel to Dorchester Academy Thursday for JV and varsity games starting at 4:30 p.m.


Sabb likely to be in runoff for Kingstree Senate seat

ronnie sabbA Williamsburg County attorney who currently represents a sliver of Clarendon County in the South Carolina General Assembly will likely face-off in a runoff Sept. 16 to replace former Sen. Yancey McGill.

Rep. Ronnie Sabb, D-Greeleyvile, received 24.7 percent of the vote in a special election held Tuesday to fill McGill’s seat. McGill resigned from the post earlier this summer after being voted by fellow senators to be lieutenant governor.

Christopher McKagen of the Florence Morning News reported Tuesday that Lake City attorney Cezar McKnight’s 24.4 percent made the race too close to call for who will face Sam Floyd … Read the rest

Addie Lucille Tedder Robinson

OBITS-BACKGROUND-smallerAddie Lucille Tedder Robinson, 76, widow of Herbert E. Robinson, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, at NHC Healthcare in Sumter.

Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Ed Blease and Theo McGee Tedder. She was a member of Concord Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher. She was employed at Sumter School District 2, Campbell Soup Co. and Porter’s Grill.

Survivors include a son, Robert Calhoun (Marji) Robinson of Summerton; a grandson, Robert James “R.J.” Robinson; and her sister-in-law and roommate, Zelene Robinson.

SHERIFfClarendon County law enforcement has been issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) for a S.C. license plate taken from a business on St. Paul Road in Summerton. The number on the plate is HPF 922. Anyone with information is asked to call the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office at (803) 435-4414.

If it rains, it probably won’t happen until later today, according to the National Weather Service, which foresees our best chance of precipitation happening after 5 p.m.

It’s currently 77 degrees with humidity levels reaching 84 percent.

Today’s high is 94 with heat index values reaching 102 degrees. There is a hazardous weather outlook covering our area in connection with the possibility of damaging winds and localized flooding. Tonight’s low is around 73 degrees with winds out of the south at 5 p.m.

 


Child find screenings at Summerton Early Childhood Center

CHILD FINDClarendon School District 1 will conduct free vision, hearing, speech and developmental screenings as part of a child find effort to identify students with special needs. The screenings will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on the second Thursday of each month at Summerton Early Childhood Center. Those dates are Sept. 11; Oct. 9; Nov. 13; Dec. 11; Jan. 8, 2015; Feb. 12, 2015; March 12, 2015; April 9, 2015; May 14, 2015.
