JV Saints now 3-0 on season for volleyball

fleur-de-lis-red-mdThe Clarendon Hall JV volleyball team remained undefeated for the season by going 2-0 against Dorchester Academy on Thursday night in St. George. Scores for the games were 25-17 and 25-23. The SainTs were led by Mallory McIntosh and Mackenzie Norman, who each scored 12 points. Madison Kidd and Sydney Wells added eight points each. The JV saints pushed their record to 3-0 on the season.

They will next play 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Colleton Preparatory in Walterboro.

Duke Energy warning customers of fraudulent activities

fraudDuke Energy reported earlier today that several recent scams in its service territories have “left some customers out of money,” according to a release.

“These customers were scammed by individuals or companies claiming to represent Duke Energy,” the release states. “Duke Energy reminds you to protect yourself by contacting us and local law enforcement if you suspect or experience fraudulent activity.



Some customers report receiving misleading phone calls from individuals who identify themselves as Duke Energy employees or a third-party representative of the company. In some cases, the customer’s caller identification will display Duke Energy’s name … Read the rest

LMA Varsity volleyball team victorious

LMA ShieldThe Laurence Manning Academy varsity volleyball team won 3-1 in matches against Williamsburg Academy in Kingstree on Wednesday night. The scores were 25-17, 28-27, 25-22 and 25-22. Courtney Beatson scored 15 kills and 11 points; Sara Herbert had 12 kills; and Megan Grams had nine serve points.


CHS evens volleyball record 2-2 against Dorchester Academy

fleur-de-lis-red-mdClarendon Hall’s varsity volleyball team evened its record at 2-2 on the season Thursday with a conference win of 3-2 against Dorchester Academy in St. George. The scores for the games were 26-16, 25-19, 25-29, 25-16, and 15-12. The Saints were led by Emily Brunson, who scored 22 points. Ava English added 21 points, and Holly Carlisle and Shannon Corbett added 15 points each. The Saints evened their region record to 2-2 on the season.

Two debates scheduled for GOV’s race

YourVoteCountsCOLUMBIA (AP) — Gov. Nikki Haley, Democratic Sen. Vincent Sheheen and petition candidate Tom Ervin are participating in an Oct. 14 debate in Charleston.
Haley and Ervin also have agreed to debate Oct. 21 in the Upstate. Both are co-sponsored by The Post and Courier and TV stations across the state.
Sheheen’s campaign says he wants to participate in more debates, but Oct. 21 conflicts with a previously proposed debate in Myrtle Beach, and the campaign is trying to work out the schedule so every region gets a debate.

Doug Gardner releases trailer for documentary, ‘Sea Horses’

One of the many stunning visual scenes from the trailer for “Sea Horses,” a documentary on the wild horses of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, for which Doug Gardner and Jared Lloyd are raising funds.

The documentary that local and world renown wildlife photographer Doug Gardner is working on for the next two years is more of a “visual feast” than a film, he said.

Gardner is serving as cinematography and field producer on “Sea Horses” with good friend Jared Lloyd, the executive producer and cinematographer.

LMA ShieldThe Laurence Manning Academy Swampcats tennis team couldn’t put up a win Wednesday against Williamsburg Academy in Kingstree. Stats for singles games saw LMA’s six players bested in nearly all of their six matches against WA players.

Singles players for LMA included Amanda Newman, Ansley Ridgill, Kaela Johnson, Mackenzie Ham, Mason Ham and Allie Johnson. They played, respectively against WA players Mary Webbg Adams, Katelyn Tisdale, Britt Barrett, Jeana Faye Reynolds, Sydney Anne Adams and Kinslee Wilson. An exhibition singles match between LMA player Elizabeth Collins and WA player Ann Louise Williamson ended with WA winning 8-2.

SUMMERTON – Henry Lawson, longtime civil rights leader, community activist, former member of Summerton Town Council and devoted husband of Faye Smith Lawson, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Aug. 31, 1929, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Edisto and Eliza Walters Lawson. Henry was a lifelong member of Historic Liberty Hill AME Church and served there in many capacities.

Saints set to play Andrew Jackson

First-year Clarendon Hall football coach Michael Tindall will face his former school Friday.

Tindall was the athletic director at Andrew Jackson, where he also was a teacher and coached JV football, JV girls’ basketball and assisted the varsity baseball team.

For Tindall, it’s not about himself and his former school.

“It has nothing to do with me,” he said. “It’s about the guys who put on the uniform every week and play.”

Man convicted in Slick Gibbons’ attack makes successful court appeal; state AG will appeal decision

A 40-year-old man convicted in 2012 for his alleged role in the 2010 assault and kidnapping of a Manning businessman has made a successful petition to the South Carolina Court of Appeals, leaving his conviction overturned.

Michael Wilson Pearson was convicted in Clarendon County on charges of first-degree burglary, armed robbery, grand larceny, kidnapping and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and was sentenced to a total of 60 years in prison.
