Highway Patrol monitoring ‘reckless tractor trailer’ on I-95

South_Carolina_Highway_PatrolThe S.C. Highway Patrol has reported a reckless driver of a tractor trailer on Interstate-95, just having passed the 130 mile-marker going northbound. They say he is traveling at a high rate of speed and not stopping.


Alzheimer’s Poker Run

lake-marion-poker-runThe Lake Marion Alzheimer’s Support Group’s biggest fundraiser of the year is scheduled for Saturday.

The 10th annual Alzheimer’s Poker Run will hold registration from 10 a.m. to noon at Manning Restaurant, 476 N. Brooks St. Reservation forms may also be picked up before 9 a.m. Saturday at Lake Vue Landing, where the run will end at 3 p.m.

Betty Welloch, the program director for the support group, said the event usually raises about $1,000. Motorcycles and vehicles are welcome. The registration fee is $30 a couple or $20 per person with first prize getting $100, second prize getting $75 … Read the rest

OBITS-BACKGROUND-7-smallerElder Warren E. Hatcher died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital in Charleston.

Born Jan. 26, 1942, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Rev. Frank and Mary Green Hatcher. He graduated from Manchester High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Morris College.

He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior early in life, becoming a member of Antion RMUE Church. He was employed with Yuasa Exide, the federal building and retired from Wateree Correctional Institution.

Mattie James Walters

SUMMERTON – Mattie James Walters, 92, widow of Mott Walters, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, at Northwoods Senior Living Care in Sumter.

Born Oct. 25, 1921, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Julius and Hattie Richburg James.

Two children preceded her in death, Vivian Walters-Steel and Melvin Walters.

At a young age, Mattie joined Taw Caw Baptist Church in Clarendon County, where she served faithfully as a member. As a young adult, Mattie left South Carolina, but continued her servitude to God by joining Union Baptist Church in New York, N.Y.

Taw Caw tracts tapped for timber

Fifty nine acres of land on two parcels next to Taw Caw Creek have been targeted for timber harvests, records show.

The first tract, a 27 acre parcel, will see a final harvest of all trees, the contract shows, for which Alvis J. Bynum will receive $52,922.93 from Charles Ingram Lumber Company.

The second tract is 32 acres and will see the Henry C. Bynum Revocable Trust receive $65,752.72 for a final harvest from the same company, a family business in Effingham.
