Queen Elizabeth Gamble Boulware Rose

OBITS-BACKGROUND-3-smallerQueen Elizabeth Gamble Boulware Rose, 82, widow of Hazel Rose and former wife of Richard Boulware, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree.

Born on June 26, 1932, in New Zion, she was a daughter of the late Alex and Helen Flemming Gamble.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at Lodabar AME Church in New Zion with the Rev. Debra Bradley, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the Friendship Presbyterian Church cemetery, New Zion.

The body lay in repose one hour prior to services.

Wright Turbeville to speak at Union UMC

OBITS-BACKGROUND-5-smallerMichael Adell Kolb, 47, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, as a result of a boating accident.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of William Dean Kolb and the late Janette McIntosh Kolb. Mike was the owner and operator of Mike Paints Cars 2.

Survivors besides his father of Sumter include a  son, John Michael Kolb of Gray, Ga.; two brothers, Johnny (Missy) Kolb of Sumter and Bobby (Tanya) Kolb of Manning; a sister, Kelly (Dwayne) Geddings of Sumter; a number of nieces and nephews; and many friends, including two special friends, Jay Gainey and Jade McCoy.

WEATHERFORD, Texas – Francis LeRoy Bradham Sr. died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014.

Born April 11, 1927, in Clarendon County, Roy was a son of the late Marion Horry Bradham and Sally Gardner Bradham. After graduating in 1945 from Edmunds High School in Sumter, he served in the U.S. Army with the 7th Division post-war occupation of Korea til September 1947. He graduated in 1951 from Clemson College.

Roy married his childhood sweetheart, Eleanor Jane Kinney, Aug. 26, 1949, in Sumter, and they celebrated their 65th anniversary on Aug. 26, 2014.

We’re looking for your suggestions this time around as to what type of Carolina/Clemson-related punishment the loser should do, within reason.

A New Zion man posted a $5,000 surety bond last week to obtain his release from the Clarendon County Detention Center, just one day after his arrest by the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office for first-degree assault and battery.

Steve Allen Franklin, 44, of 1091 Linden St. in New Zion, was arrested Sept. 11 in relation to an incident that allegedly happened at his home on Aug. 30. According to a report from the sheriff’s office, a male victim told deputies that he went to Franklin’s home to buy a “bag of marijuana and a beer.”

LMA ShieldThe Laurence Manning Academy varsity volleyball team lost 2-1 against Wilson Hall in Sumter. The scores were 27-25 (W), 25-10 (L) and 25-11 (L). Sara Herbert had 14 kills; Courtney Beatson had nine kills; and Breanna Bradham had 20 assists.

The team travels today to Orangeburg Prep.

lma_shieldThe Laurence Manning Academy junior varsity volleyball team lost Tuesday 2-1 against Wilson Hall in Sumter. The scores were 25-15 (W), 25-13 (L) and 25-8 (L). Brooke Ward had seven kills; Madisyn Hudson had seven serve points.

The team plays today against Orangeburg Prep in Orangeburg.

Foreman Dave Turcotte said the site should be cleared within the next few days.

Bonaparte announces write-in candidacy for District 1 board

Former Clarendon School District 1 board chairman John Bonaparte announced today that he will run as a write-in candidate to retain his seat on the board. Bonaparte did not re-file for his seat before the Aug. 29 deadline. Four filed for three seats open on the board, including incumbent Tony Junious and newcomers James Parson, Cynthia Risher and Keith Bowman.

The National Weather Service has issued a dense fog advisory in effect until 10 a.m. as visibility is severely limited.

It’s currently 68 degrees with 88 percent humidity. Today’s high should be 81 with calm winds out of the northeast.

Tonight there’s a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 10 p.m. under mostly cloudy skies with a low around 65.

MISSCLARENDONCREWThe Miss Clarendon Scholarship Pageant will hold a meeting 2 p.m. Sept. 20 at Seacoast House, 201 N. Church St. in Manning, for those interested in becoming Miss Clarendon or Miss Clarendon Teen. Prospective candidates will learn about the pageant, areas of competition and the Miss America organization. Teen contestants must be ages 13-17 by June 2015, and no higher than junior year in high school. Miss contestants must bee ages 17-24, and at least a senior in high school.
