A Manning man is facing several serious charges after allegedly fighting with officers during a traffic stop last week near West Huggins Street and Oakland Avenue in Manning. Melvin Junior Williams, 31, of 726 Barnwell St. in Manning, was charged about 10:40 p.m. Sept. 20 with resisting arrest, assault on a law enforcement officer, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, liquor law violations and speeding. According to reports, Williams was clocked going 41 in a 35 on Huggins Street in Manning by officers William B. Secrist II and Creighton Cheek about an hour before his arrest. He told police that he had drank earlier in the day, and when officers said they smelled marijuana, he said he "didn't mess with drugs," and gave consent for them to search the car. A red SOLO cup with liquor in it was found in the vehicle, according to reports. When Secrist tried to search Williams' person, the suspect allegedly became argumentative and combative, eventually laying on the ground and yelling and kicking. He ultimately kicked another patrolman in the stomach and struck Secrist in the stomach with his knee. When finally able to search Williams, officers found in his groin area a clear baggy containing two baggies with a green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana. They also found seven clear baggies containing a white powder substance believed to be cocaine. They also found $1,355 in cash. Williams brother, Trent, was also charged for interfering with police, as he would not stay back when police told him to. No bond information was available Friday for Williams.
