Foreston resident remembers storm

Lowonder Whack wrote us in late April, when we first started looking for personal recollections about Hurricane Hugo. She sent us this message: "My nephew, Reggie Ragins, was born the day before Hugo. My niece, Toyeisha Williams, was one of the babies born during the storm. It was soon after the eye of the storm started passing over Clarendon Memorial Hospital. I will never forget thinking about how the hospital was going to collapse with everyone inside, but we made it." She said she couldn't believe the devastation. The Foreston resident continued: "A drive that would normally take about 15 minutes took more than an hour. We were thankful to see that our homes survived with little damage when we finally made it home from the hospital. I don’t think I’d ever want to go through anything like that again, and I feel bad for anyone that has to.”
