A New Zion man posted a $5,000 surety bond last week to obtain his release from the Clarendon County Detention Center, just one day after his arrest by the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office for first-degree assault and battery. Steve Allen Franklin, 44, of 1091 Linden St. in New Zion, was arrested Sept. 11 in relation to an incident that allegedly happened at his home on Aug. 30. According to a report from the sheriff's office, a male victim told deputies that he went to Franklin's home to buy a "bag of marijuana and a beer." The man said he gave Franklin $10, and the suspect kept the change, which started an argument. He alleged that Franklin then stabbed him in the lower back with a knife. Franklin told deputies that several people and the victim came in his home uninvited and started a confrontation. He said he did not know how the victim got stabbed. The victim's grandmother said she witnessed Franklin stab the victim. Franklin faces up to 10 years in prison, if convicted.
