Remembering Hugo: Cynthia and Al Risher

Posted
Cynthia and Al Risher sent us these photos of a can of water donated in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo in 1989. They saved the can as a "souvenir" of their survival of the storm. "We lived in West Ashley at the time, and Al was working at the shipyard the night Hugo came through, and I was teaching fourth grade out on John's Island," Cynthia said. "I remember telling my kids not to worry and that I would see them in the morning. When we finally went back to work over a month later, I don't think they believed anything else that came out of my mouth the rest of the year!" "I never took another storm of any type lightly," Cynthia added. "I remember walking around the next morning in a total daze. The most vivid picture in my mind's eye remains to this day: Seeing with my own eyes a huge yacht in the middle of U.S. 17."
