EDITOR’S NOTE: Sarah "Lisa" Whitfield, one of the stylists and owners at Brooks Street Barber and Beauty, is one of nearly 100 local businesswomen who will be recognized Sept. 23 during Main Street Manning’s annual meeting. Sarah “Lisa” Whitfield said going to beauty school at Personal Touch in Kingstree while raising two children – Ishawn and Tania – as a single parent with no job was no easy endeavor.
“But God made a way for me to go to beauty school and still take care of my two kids,” she said. Encouraged by her pastor, Eartha Carter of Prayer House Mission Church, and Margie Gaymon of New Image Salon, Whitfield stepped out of the retail industry and into the haircare industry.
“I love doing hair and serving the people of Clarendon County,” she said. “The most challenging thing is making sure I satisfy my clients.”
A Jordan native, Whitfield graduated from Manning High School in 1989.
“I thank God for Margie Gaymon and Pastor Carter for their many years of encouragement,” Whitfield said. “Every time they would encourage me to go to beauty school, I would always tell them that I didn’t want to do hair. But one day I decided to go, and God made a way.”
