SUMMERTON – Mattie James Walters, 92, widow of Mott Walters, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, at Northwoods Senior Living Care in Sumter.

Born Oct. 25, 1921, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Julius and Hattie Richburg James.

Two children preceded her in death, Vivian Walters-Steel and Melvin Walters.

At a young age, Mattie joined Taw Caw Baptist Church in Clarendon County, where she served faithfully as a member. As a young adult, Mattie left South Carolina, but continued her servitude to God by joining Union Baptist Church in New York, N.Y.

She served as president of the Pastor's Aide Committee and as a member of the Missionary Board for many years. In 1985, she relocated to Summerton and rejoined Taw Caw Baptist Church, where she served on the senior choir and as former president of the Missionary Board.

Mattie James Walters was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star Spring Hill Chapter No. 263. She was employed by Bloomingdale Department Store in sales for 20 years and considered herself a fashionista.

Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline (Sylvester) Evans of Bronx, N.Y.; grandchildren, Tracey (Ricco) Burns, Lindsay Steele, DeShon Evans, Vivian N. Steele and Jenee Evans; and great-grandchildren, Ariel Steele, NaShee Pritchett, Amir Steel, Travell Nelson, C.J. Steele, Zaire Evans and Layla Burgess.

Eastern Star rites will be held 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, at Hayes F. and LaNelle J. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St. in Manning.

The celebratory services for Mattie James Walters will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, 1130 Granby Road in Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiating, and Minister Dorothy Thomas and Minister Betty Johnson assisting. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.

Mrs. Walters will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 1468 Oliver James Road in Summerton.
