Floral Studio holds ribbon cutting

A new floral studio on West Rigby Street hosted a ribbon cutting today and was officially welcomed into the Manning business community.

“We look forward to serving you and to you serving the community,” John Belding, told Helen Brailsford, the owner of Garden House Floral Studio. “It’s exciting to have new ventures come into town,” the incoming president of the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce told her.

Manning Mayor Julia Nelson was also on hand, along with City Administrator Scott Tanner and Carrie Trebil, the director of tourism and community development.

Fire in woods on I-95

CCFDThe Clarendon County Fire Department and other emergency responders are currently fighting a fire in a wooded area between the 133 and 135 mile-markers in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95. Traffic will likely be slower during this time.

OBITS-BACKGROUND-7-smallerPerry “P.L.” Wilson Jr. died Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at Clarendon Extended Care & Rehab at Lake Marion.

Born Nov. 3, 1949, he was a son of Lucille Fleming Wilson and the late Perry Wilson Sr. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He began his career as a farmer and later became a truck driver. He was formerly married to Ruth Ragin.

Margie Jean Kelly

Margie Jean Kelly, 81, widow of Billy Kelly, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014.

Born in Bonito Springs, Fla., she was a daughter of the late George Thomas and Goldie Boyett Strickland. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church, and a member of the Clemson Extension Homemakers Association from 1988-2000, serving as president for seven years.

Surviving include a son, George A. Kelly of Hartsville; a daughter, Kimberly H. Coker of Hartsville; and two grandchildren, Joshua Kelly of Hartsville and Pagelynn Coker of Turbeville.

CCFDThe Clarendon County Fire Department is currently responding to a fire at a mobile home in the 1400 block of Stukes Road near Lake Marion. According to dispatch, a meter box connected to the structure is showing heavy smoke.

The Silver native, who moved to New York when she was 3, was the first African-American woman to win the U.S. Open and Wimbledon.

Born May 31, 1945, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd B. Mixon and Elsie Gamble Mixon.  She was a member of Turbeville Southern Methodist Church.

Survivors include a brother, Steve Gamble (Connie) of New Zion; four nephews, Mike Mixon (Althea) of Lynchburg and Steven Gamble (Courtney), Jason Gamble (Jennifer) and Martin Gamble (Anna Lynn), all of New Zion; and two nieces, Sarah Green (Scott) of Lynchburg and Allison Gamble Horton (Lee) of Inman.

A 39-year-old Manning man was charged last week for an alleged sexual assault on a 10-year-old girl six months ago in Sumter County.

Shannon Allen Pack of 1334 Laurens Ave. in Manning was denied bond on a charge of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Reports from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office indicate a Sumter guardian ad litem told deputies the girl told him about the incident during a home visit at the girl’s grandparents’ home.

OBITS-BACKGROUND-3-smallerReginald Ricky Ragin, 55, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia.

Born Nov. 13, 1958, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Alonzo and Julia Robinson Ragin.
Services for Mr. Ragin will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2014, at Prayer House Mission. Services will be officiated by Pastor Eartha B. Carter, and the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson will serve as eulogist. Burial will follow in Summerton Funeral Home cemetery.

Library closed on Labor Day

HARVIN-CLARENDON-COUNTY-LIBRARYThe Harvin Clarendon County Library will be closed Sept. 1 for the Labor Day holiday, and will reopen from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. The book-drop will be available for the return of unrestricted materials.
