Library closed for Labor Day

HARVIN-CLARENDON-COUNTY-LIBRARYThe Harvin Clarendon County Library will be closed Sept. 1 for the Labor Day holiday, and will reopen from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. The book-drop will be available for the return of unrestricted materials.

shannon-lewisDenver, Colo., native Shannon Lewis has joined Denise Bethea and Misty Ureche at Spa Serenty on 9 S. Mill St. in Manning in Studio 1916.

Lewis has licenses in nails, massage therapy and aesthetics, but says massage therapy is her passion. She has been with Spa Serenity for about a month, joining them right after the business moved from its former location.

Clarendon Hall beat Henry Academy 28-14 tonight.

The Saints will host Andrew Jackson Academy next Friday.

Manning High vs. Scott’s Branch recap

Manning High continued their domination against Scott’s Branch tonight. The Monarchs put 47 points on the board and didn’t allow Scott’s Branch to find the endzone.

Raquan Bennet lead the way for the Monarchs with three rushing touchdowns. James McCoy and Greg Canty also scored one touchdown a piece on the ground.

Manning High’s quarterback Tommy King found Aaron Boatwright for a 43 yard touchdown, and Darius Sharper for a 19 yard touchdown.

Manning High plays their first home game of the season next Friday against Marion.

C.E. Murray stomped Lincoln 57-20 tonight.

The War Eagles will play at Hemingway next Friday.

Laurence Manning’s defense clicked on all cylinders tonight and boosted the ‘Cats to a 14-5 win against Augusta Christian.

Laurence Manning’s head football coach Robbie Briggs was elated with his team’s effort.

2 “This is the second year in a row that we’ve beat Augusta Christian,” Briggs said. “They are a good football team, and I’m thankful we beat them.”

Action started with the Lions on offense. After a quick series the Swampcat defense forced Augusta Christian to punt the ball.

CCFD responds to grass/woods fire

IMG_0016The Clarendon County Fire Department responded about 4 p.m. today to a grass and woods fire that ultimately got out of control.

According to reports, a man on Cassie Lane Drive off Raccoon Road in Manning was burning trash. The first got out of control and burned a fence. No one was hurt in the incident.


JV Saints fall in opening home game

fleur-de-lis-red-mdThe Clarendon Hall Junior Varsity football team lost its opening home game Thursday night, falling 20-12 to Patrick Henry Academy, bringing the record to 1-1 on the season.

The Patriots were able to score early with two first-quarter touchdowns, including a 63-yard interception for a touchdown.

The Saints offense sputtered early in the second quarter with a fumble on the Patriot 8-yard line and also drove to the Patriot 25-yard line, but ran out of time as the first half ended. DNR to step-up lake patrols for Labor Day weekend

DNR4cCapt. Robert McCullough said boaters on Lake Marion can expect to see more enforcement this weekend from the law enforcement division of the state Department of Natural Resources.

“Lake Marion has been hit hard this year by a lot of deaths and accidents,” McCullough said. “Our goal this weekend is to have everyone enjoy the lake safely and then get home safely.”

McCullough said Lake Marion has had seven deaths this summer – six of those on the Clarendon County side. He said officers will be patrolling to check for safety equipment, including life jackets and fire extinguishers. They will … Read the rest

YourVoteCountsThe Rev. Mitchell Adger, chairman of the Clarendon County School Board, said four candidates filed for three open seats on the Clarendon School District 1 board.

He said incumbents James Jones and John Bonaparte did not file by the deadline, which was noon today. He said incumbent Tony Junious had refiled for his seat on the board. Joining him in the race – which will be decided during the Nov. 4 general election – is James Parson, Cynthia Risher and Keith Bowman.

OBITS-BACKGROUND-8-smallerArlena Wilson Spann, devoted wife of 62 years to Willie Lee Spann Jr., died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 30, 19326, in Bordeau, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Rev. James Maylon and Willie Mae Tucker Wilson.

Survivors include a number of family and friends.

The family will receive friends at the home, 200 Collins St. in Manning.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. today in the chapel of Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home.

Man stabbed in face during assault adds kidnapping, CSC and assault charges

A 40-year-old Manning man stabbed in the face last week after allegedly attacking a 44-year-old man now faces new charges stemming from a separate incident.

Eric Keith Stephens – whose address has been given as 2426 Home Branch Road and 4191 N. Brewington Road – already faced charges of second-degree assault and battery and unlawful neglect of a child related to an incident that happened Aug. 21 where he allegedly attacked a man early that morning while the man was trying to get to work.

Sumter woman and her two adult children charged with shoplifting

crime-reportA 37-year-old Sumter woman and her 19-year-old son and daughter were arrested Aug. 19 for shoplifting at a store in the 2000 block of Paxville Highway.

Arkell Shaneen Eaglin of 4575 U.S. 15 South in Sumter was charged with shoplifting, according to a report from the Manning Police Department, as were her children, Adrian Jimell Eaglin of 2925 Lens Heavins Road in Sumter, and Adrianna Jidaja Eaglin of 42 Edwards St. in Sumter.

A loss prevention specialist with the store told police about 11:30 a.m. Aug. 19 that Adrian Eaglin took a Survivor iPhone case valued at $35, put it … Read the rest
