The first day of school at the Fleming Felder Head Start Center in Alcolu ended with smoke billowing throughout the building. Clarendon Fire Chief Frances Richbourg said Tuesday that an air-conditioning unit on the roof of the building - which is adjacent to Phoenix Charter High School and Wateree Community Actions Inc. - malfunctioned and sent smoke throughout the building. "There was no real damage," Richbourg said.
