Manning man adds assault and battery to murder, attempted murder charges

A 21-year-old Manning man charged last year for his alleged role in the beating death of 50-year-old Anthony Ronald Wimberly of Manning has added a new charge after allegedly assaulting a guard at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center. Jonathan Cody Newman was charged last week with second-degree assault and battery, along with Mario Antwan Lloyd, 23, of Sumter. Officials with the jail – to which Newman was moved from Clarendon County Detention Center after his arrest last year – said a 34-year-old guard had to be transported to Tuomey Regional Medical Center after the incident. Reports indicate the suspects rushed the guard while he was standing in a commons area at the jail. They then repeatedly punched him in the head. Newman was arrested last summer, along with Montag Lamall Webb and Latroy Samuels, and charged with murder, attempted murder and first-degree burglary after an investigation into a brutal assault upon Wimberly at his home on Church Street in Manning. Wimberly later died from his injuries, leading to the murder charges.
