DNR files charges against man in July boating death

Capt. Robert McCullough with the state Department of Natural Resources says a Sumter man has been arrested for his alleged role in the boating death of a Sumter woman in early July. Chad Morris was charged formally today with reckless homicide by operation of a boat and failure to render aid. Morris is accused of operating a boat that struck another carrying Hailey Joanne Bordeaux of Sumter early July 4 near Taw Caw on Lake Marion. Bordeaux died from injuries that appeared to include a broken neck, according to Clarendon County Deputy Coroner Charles Jackson. McCullough said an ongoing investigation led to the charges. "We don't rush when dealing with a fatality on the water," McCullough said. "The crime scene itself is always fluid. It's always moving: You can't go back to the exact spot where an incident occurred. After interviews and as much reconstruction as possible - working in conjunction with the 3rd Circuit Solicitor's Office - this is where we ended up. Now we will proceed with the prosecution."
