Franklin Hampton Sr., 89, husband of Ruth Drayton Hampton, died Sunday, July 27, 2014.

Born Oct. 30, 1924, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Johnny and Emma McConico Hampton. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Antioch RMUE Church. In 1959, he moved his family to New York City and joined People's Institutional AME Church in Brooklyn, N.Y., serving there as a trustee. He retired in 1988 from Imperial Lamb and Veal Co. In January 1993, he returned to South Carolina and reunited with his church, Antioch RMUE, where he was a faithful steward and father of the church.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include four sons, Willie (Velina) Hampton of Sumter, Franklin Hampton Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of New Jersey, John Hampton of Summerton and Richard (Joyce) Hampton of Columbia; three daughters, Thomasina (Aaron) Fields of Queens, N.Y., and Rachel Chambers and Sandra Thompson, both of Brooklyn; two sisters, Susan Richardson of Pinewood and Annie Spann of Philadelphia, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Irvin (Lue Ethel) Drayton and Paul Hill; two sisters-in-law, Ethel Richardson and Mary Ellen Drayton; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Viewing for Mr. Hampton will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Franklin Hampton Sr. will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Antioch RMUE Church, Pinewood, with Pastor William Green. Assisting will be Elder Warren Hatcher, Bishop William Polite Jr., Elder Amos Hatcher, the Rev. Bobby Smith and the Rev. Powell Hampton Jr. Burial will follow in New Hope Community Cemetery, Pinewood.

The family will receive friends at the home, 2611 Drayton McKnight Road in Pinewood.
