Community dedicates Summerton street for former educator

Community leaders in Summerton, led by Eliza Reid and Mary Wilson, came together Friday to dedicate a portion of Fourth Street in Summerton to Dr. B.O. Butler, who served as an educator, principal, superintendent and board member for Clarendon School District 1, home of the landmark Briggs v. Elliott court case that evolved into Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kan., the case that ended school segregation across the U.S. Butler was the first black superintendent in South Carolina. "It was an honor for me to introduce a bill in the S.C. Senate to dedicate Fourth Street in Summerton, which runs by the former Scott's Branch High School (now the Clarendon 1 Parenting Center) in honor of Dr. Butler," said Sen. Kevin Johnson, D-Manning.
