A Timmonsville company signed a timber cutting agreement to harvest a sizable chunk of land just east of the Interstate 95 and S.C. 527 nexus, records show. Keels Land and Timber Company paid $145,486.50 to American Resource Group to cut 72 acres, with American Forest Management of Sumter acting as the broker. Vann Page, the forester representing Keels Land and Timber Co., said he expects harvesting the pine trees will get underway before year's end. About 5,000 to 6,000 tons is the expected yield, he said. The agreement gives the timber company until Oct. 31, 2015, to cut the pines, but Page expects a brief time frame to complete the job. "It should take about four weeks once we get started, depending on the weather," he said. "Three to four weeks." New South Lumber in Darlington will get the logs, he said, to convert them to lumber. Bill Gaskins of American Forest Management said the Timmonsville company put in the highest bid. American Forest Management was founded in 1966 by Bartow Shaw Jr., whose family donated a sizable portion of the land just outside Manning that is now preserved as Pocotaligo Nature Walk. AFM is the largest forest consulting and real estate brokerage firm in the United States, according to their website, and currently manages over 4.7 million acres of privately owned timberland.
