Meleney recognized by state program

Main Street South Carolina recognized Janet Meleney with the 2014 Main Street South Carolina Downtown Service Award at the Municipal Association’s 74th Annual Meeting on July 12. Meleney was nominated by Main Street Manning. The award recognizes an elected official, appointed public official, resident or organization who contributes leadership, vision and support to downtown revitalization efforts beyond the normal call of duty. Since 2008, Meleney has served as an active member of the Main Street Manning’s design committee and volunteers to help at all Main Street events. She has volunteered countless hours to strengthen the community’s knowledge and understanding of historical resources in Manning. To complete the Manning commercial district’s application to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places, Meleney meticulously researched and compiled historical and architectural information for 60 structures. Manning went on to use the information to create a downtown walking tour brochure. “Janet Meleney is a wonderful example of the importance of volunteers to the success that a Main Street program can bring to cities and towns in South Carolina,” said Main Street South Carolina Manager Beppie LeGrand. Main Street South Carolina empowers residents, business owners and local officials with the knowledge, skills, tools and organizational structure necessary to revitalize their downtowns, neighborhood commercial districts and cities and towns into vibrant centers of commerce and community. Main Street South Carolina follows the National Main Street’s Four Point Approach – Organization, Promotion, Design and Economic Restructuring.
