Clarendon CDC BBQ benefit

The Clarendon County Community Development Corporation will hold a Benefit Barbecue from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at its office, 210 S. Church St. in Manning. Barbecue will be $11 per pound, and sandwiches will be $4 each. Lunch – including barbecued pork sandwich, cole slaw, cake and a drink – will be $6. For more information, call (803) 435-6639.

District 5 Candidate Forum

candidate forumThe Manning Branch of the NAACP will host a Manning City Council District 5 Candidate Forum from 4-6 p.m. today at the Manning High School lecture hall. Each of four candidates – Louis Griffith, Julius Stukes, Gloria Frierson and Sharmane Anderson – has been invited to attend. Each one will have a chance to address the audience and then field questions from a panel of Manning residents and business people.

A special election will be held July 8 for the District 5 seat, previously held by the late Gregory Witherspoon.

Summerton Job Fair

job fairClarendon School District 1 and S.C. Works will hold a Job Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. July 23 at the Clarendon School District 1 Community Resource Center, 1154 Fourth St. in Summerton. The job fair is actively seeking employers who will be3 filling positions immediately within 90 days of the event. Employers should email Karenanne Graves as kgraves@slcog.org before Tuesday.

The job fair will offer tips, including dressing for success; making a lasting impression; and what to include in your resume.

 


Henshaw wins Media Award at Miss SC Pageant

Miss Clarendon 2014 Hannah Henshaw was the recipient of this year’s Media Award from the Miss South Carolina Scholarship Pageant. The award was announced Friday night. Henshaw will compete for the state title starting 8 p.m. today. You can watch live on WACH-Fox. Miss Clarendon Teen 2014 Haley Erickson also won the Salute Page Ad Award. Both young women received $500. Henshaw’s is a scholarship, while Erickson’s is a savings bond.

Scott’s Branch Alumni Golf Tournament

The Scott’s Branch High School Alumni Association will hold its 3rd annual Benefit Golf Tournament July 5, with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m., at Foxboro Golf Club. It will be four-man, captain’s choice format at $200 per team. Tournament package include3s green fee and cart, meal, refreshments while playing, prizes and trophies, as well as door prizes. Lawrence Shuford Chewning III

SUMMERTON – Lawrence Shuford Chewning III, 64, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at his home.

Born Jan. 8, 1950, in Chicago, Ill., he was a son of the late Lawrence Shuford Chewning and Dorothy Wetniznut Chewning.

A memorial service for Lawrence Shuford Chewning III will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2014, at Summerton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Bowers officiating.

Stephens Funeral Home & Crematory, 304 N. Church St. in Manning, is in charge of arrangements, (803) 435-2179.

Clarendon All-Stars win first game in Dixie Boys Tournament over Turbeville

softballThe Clarendon County All Stars opened the Dixie Boys 9- to 10-year-olds All-Star Tournament on Friday with an 8-0 win over Turbeville at Patriot Park in Sumter.

Blaine Kennard, Dalton Brown and Mickey Jordan combined to pitched a shutout in their first game of the 9-10 All Star game in Sumter on Friday night. Ken nard pitched three innings while giving up a hit and striking out five batters.  Dalton Brown pitched the next two innings and allowed a hit and striking out three batters.  Mickey Jordan pitched the final inning and allowed no hits.

Cam Welsh joins Highway Patrol

cam welshCOLUMBIA –  James Cameron “Cam” Welsh joined the S.C. Highway Patrol on Friday, graduating as one of 43 troopers from Basic Class 94.

The 25-year-old East Clarendon High School and University of South Carolina Sumter graduate participated in a ceremony that featured an address by Gov. Nikki Haley.

“There is great power that comes with that uniform,” Haley told the graduates. “There is great respect, but that respect doesn’t come from putting it on but how you act in that uniform.”

Haley Erickson makes Clarendon proud in pageant

It’s safe to say that she’s had the best support group this week in Columbia. She has been a shining example of our county, and we at The Manning Times congratulate her on her poise and tenacity during this tough and exhausting week of competition.

Manning’s own Haley Vivian Erickson will vie for the Miss South Carolina Teen Crown starting 7 p.m. today at the Township Auditorium in Columbia in her capacity as Miss Clarendon Teen 2014.
