Spearman nabs Republican nomination for Supt. of Education

Molly Spearman will be the next Republican to run in the general election for the position of state Superintendent of Education. Spearman defeated runoff challenger Sally Atwater in Tuesday's Primary with 57.15 percent of the overall vote. Statwide, Spearman had 76,537 votes to Atwater's 57,385. Spearman will face Democrat Tom Thompson in November's general election. Forty-five of 46 precincts were counted as of 11:48 p.m. Thompson handily defeated his runoff opponent, Sheila Gallagher, on Tuesday with 59.13 percent of the vote. He garnered 23,506 votes overall to Gallagher's 16,244.
