Lewis Mendes Sr., husband of Mary Wells Mendes, died Wednesday, June 11, 2014.

Born Aug. 7, 1960, he was a son of the late Morris Mendes and Rose Rebok. “Uncle Lew,” as he was affectionately called, was a carpenter and stucco installer for 25 years; a master chef for 20 years; a disc jockey for 30 years; and self-employed for 13 years.

Survivors besides his wife of 30 years include seven children, Yiaisha Davis of Atlanta, Ga., Ieisha Mendes and Lewis J. Mendes Jr., both of Orlando, Fla., Ronnie R. Wells of McCormick, Lewis (Monica) Mendes Jr. of Alcolu, Lisa (Wayne) Mendes-Brooks of Fayetteville, N.C., and Diovan J. Mendes of Columbia; 15 grandchildren; a godson, Keenan Elleby; three brothers, Phillip Mendes of California and Allen (Sherry) Morello and Morris Mendes, both of Bridgeport, Conn.; seven sisters, Patricia (Edgar) Ivey of Arkansas, Barbara (Morris) Smith, Geraldine (John) Allen, Connie (Curtis) McLean, Mary A. (Elroy) Mendes and Lisa (Hisham) Alhabal, all of Bridgeport, and Rosie Bebok of Hartford, Conn.; four sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and close and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, David Morello and Charles Mendes; and a sister, Theresa Mendes.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church (USA), 9124 Plowden Mill Road in Alcolu, with the Rev. Samuel Sparks, pastor, and the Rev. Carnell Hampton providing eulogy.
