No win for Winn; candidate says he's not finished trying for public office

The Rev. Leon Winn has ran for public office twice.

“So far I’ve come out 0-2,” said Winn, who lost the Republican nomination for the 6th Congressional District on Tuesday night to Kingstree banker Anthony Culler. He ran two years ago for a state Senate District 36 as a Republican.

“I don’t know right at this moment what my next move is,” Winn said. “I’m just in awe that the people didn’t get out and vote. I felt that we had it, that we were going to win. I tried not to take anything for granted, but we did everything we knew how to do. We did our very best, and that’s all you can do.”

Culler won with about 63 percent of the vote, according to uncertified results from the state Election Commission.

Culler, who did not return phone calls Tuesday night, will now face U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn in the November election. Clyburn easily won his primary against challenger Karen Smith, getting 90 percent of the vote. He was the first black congressman elected from South Carolina since Reconstruction, and he is seeking his 12th term in Washington.
