Hessie Ann Lemon Martin, 97, widow of Peter Martin, died Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born May 16, 1917, in Silver, she was a daughter of the late Elliott and Almetter Banister Lemon. She attended Clarendon County public school. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and joined Union Cypress AME Church, where she sang with the community choir, ushered and was a member of the WMCA. She was a member of Spring Hill No. 263 Order of Eastern Star and Herones of Jericho Court No. 12. Hessie was a hard worker who retired not just once but from two companies and finally finished her work career at the age of 83. Survivors include a son, Evans Martin; one daughter-in-law, Paula Martin; five sisters, Claudine Linclon, Louise James, Ella Hamilton, Plummie (EJ) Kelly and Naomi (Willis) Thames; two sisters-in-law, Rosetta and Elrita Blanding; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Wake services were held Friday, June 6, 2014, at Hayes F. & LaNelle J. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St. in Manning. The celebratory services for Hessie Ann Lemon Martin will be held at 2 p.m. today at Union Cypress AME Church, Manning, with the Rev. Mary E. Hamilton, pastor, officiating, Elder James O. Robinson presiding, and the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, Elder Sampson Pearson, the Rev. Robin Kelly, the Rev. Quinton Kelly and Pastor Dwayne Johnson assisting. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery. Mrs. Martin will lie in repose one hour prior to services. The family will receive friends at 1519 Joseph Lemon & Dingle Road in Manning. These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.
