Thomas Dukes Sr., 83, husband of Evoila Butler Dukes, died Friday, May 23, 2014, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Aug. 7, 1930, in Manning, he was a son of the late Tom Dukes and Gretchel Conyers. He attended the Santee Rosenwald School, and was a member of Society Hill AME Church. He was employed by Carraway Logging and was also self-employed.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include five somes, Thomas Dukes Jr. of Manning, Roosevelt (Margaret) Dukes and Herman Dukes, both of Greensboro, N.C., Johnny (Edna) Dukes of Columbus, Ga., and Maurice (Betty) Dukes of Sumter; four daughters, Betty Ann (Jenkinson) Tindal and Pam Fields, both of Columbia, Helen Dukes Billie of Manning and Rosa Lee Patrice of Queens, N.Y.; an adopted daughter, Doretha (Doug) Asberry of Santee; an additional son-in-law, Jacob Boatwright of Manning; an additional daughter-in-law, Dorothy Dukes of High Point, N.C.; 24 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

Celebratory services for Thomas Dukes Sr. will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Society Hill AME Church, 1030 Morello Road in Manning, with the Rev. Betty Rhodes, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. O’Donald Dingle and Albert Thompson and Evangelist Betty Canty. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.

Mr. Dukes will lie in repose one hour prior to services.

The family will receive friends at the home, 8154 Bloomville Road in Manning.
