Lady Swampcats defeat Wilson Hall in Sumter

lma_shieldThe Laurence Manning Academy Lady Swampcats won 4-1 in eight innings on Monday against Wilson Hall in Sumter. Courtney Beatson had two hits and was the winning pitcher. Emily McElveen had a hit and Maddie Cantley had two.

 


2014-15 budget major focus of Clarendon County Council meeting

The fiscal year budget for 2014-15 will be a major focus of the regular meeting of Clarendon County Council, which will be held 6 p.m. today at council chambers in the Clarendon County Administration on Sunset Drive. The meetings are open to the public, and residents are encouraged to attend.

 


Library to hold Teddy Bear Picnic

Historical Society to visit Hartsville

The Clarendon County Historical Society’s annual Spring Tour will be May 15. This year, the society will be visiting several locations in Hartsville, including Coker College, Kalmia Gardens, First Baptist Church chapel, the Hartsville Museum and much more. They will gather at 7:30 a.m. May 15 in the parking lot of First Baptist Church in Manning, and will leave by 8 a.m. Some walking will be required, so wear comfortable shoes. No high heels, please. Cornell Prince

SUMTER – Cornell Prince, 85, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Sept. 27, 1928, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Robert Prince and Ann Toney Prince. He was a member of Goodwill Presbyterian Church, and retired from Indian River Terminal Inc. of Fort Pierce, Fla.

Survivors include two daughters, Queen P. Jackson and Connie Ann Prince, both of Fort Pierce; and a son, George White of Fort Pierce; three granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Jasper Prince of Whiteville, N.C.; two sisters, Moszell Johnson and Mildred McBridge; and a special cousin … Read the rest

Spencer McGarrett WashingtonHOLLY HILL – Spencer McGarrett Washington, 40, died Friday, March 28, 2014 in Galveston, Texas.
Born Sunday, Dec. 16, 1973, in Charleston County, he was a son of David Washington of Holly Hill and Bertha Washington of Ladson. At an early age, he joined Greater Unity AME Church. He grew up in Holly Hill, and attended Orangeburg County public schools. He was a 1992 graduate of Holly Hill-Roberts High School. He was most recently employed at Dixie Turbine Service.

SUMTER – Crystal Elaine Myers Gousby Singleton, wife of Ryan K. Singleton, died Tuesday, April 5, 2014, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

crystal-singletonBorn May 22, 1987, she was a daughter of Dwayne Gousby and Nichelle N. Smith, and stepdaughter of Ulysses Smith. She attended Sumter County public schools and was a 2005 graduate of Lakewood High School. She gave her life to Christ at an early age at St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church.

SUMTER – Sandra Jean Minoughan, 73, died Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Chandler Brogdon and Virginia Louise Hill Brogdon. Mrs. Minoughan was a member of Grace Baptist Church. She was a retired registered nurse at Hopewell Healthcare Center. She was a former first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal.

Willie B. Vaughn, widow of Frank Vaughn Sr., died Friday, April 11, 2014, at the home.

Born Oct. 13, 1922, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Rebecca Epps Lemmon.  Mrs. Vaughn was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and a pillar of the Shiloh community. Although she never had a career that took her outside of the home, her deep sense of love for her family and friends reached far beyond just her home. Affectionately known as “Gran-noonie” she made everyone feel like one of her own.

ALCOLU – Deacon Gussie Thames Sr., 78, husband of Evangelist Dorothy Gray Stukes Thames, died Wendesday, April 9, 2014, at his home.

Born May 1, 1935, in Manning, he was a son of the late Daniel K. “D.K.” Thames and Ruth Pearson Thames.

Celebratory services for Deacon Gussie Thames Sr. will be held 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, 4829 Alex Harvin Highway in Manning, with the Rev. Terry Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery. Deacon Thames will lie in repose for one hour prior to services.

Jessie Mae Hampton Mitchell, widow of Samuel Alfred Mitchell Jr., died Monday, April 7, 2014, at High Point Regional Hospital in North Carolina.

Born Dec. 25, 1931, in Fayetteville, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Malachi and Susan Hampton.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Ray Mitchell.

Survivors include 10 children; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 12, 2014, at St. Phillip UME Church in Pinewood. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Born April 11, 1968, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Robert Lee Coleman and Katie McCray. He was a gifted, well-liked, affable personality in the community because of his loving heart. He attended Sumter High School, and some of his favorite hobbies were cooking and reading. Knowledge Supreme Scientific was an intelligent man with great skills in carpentry and construction. Though perhaps unorthodox for a professional golfer, Miguel Angel Jimenez is once again in contention on Sunday at The Masters after he fired a third round 66 to jump into a tie for fifth place. With six birdies, an eagle and a bogey, his 18 holes on Saturday were 10 strokes better than his Friday effort.
