Toddler still recovering in Columbia hospital

A 2-year-old Pinewood girl who suffered internal injuries and head trauma from an alleged beating at her home on Tuesday night is still recovering at a Columbia hospital.

sheriff-sealAndrew Billups, the toddler’s mother’s boyfriend, told Clarendon County Sheriff’s deputies that he found the child unresponsive and in a “seizure-like” state about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Deputies responded to Clarendon Memorial Hospital about two hours later, and reported multiple apparent injuries to the child, including bruises and scratched. Doctors confirmed internal injuries. The child was airlifted to Palmetto Richland’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. No arrests have been made in the case.

Sheriff’s Office Investigating possible toddler beating

A 2-year-old girl is recovering at a Columbia hospital today after injuries caused Tuesday night by a possible beating.

SHERIFfInvestigators with the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office say the toddler’s mother’s boyfriend found the child about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, and called the mother to say the child was having a seizure. The woman told investigators that she left the home on Lands End Road in the Pinewood area of Clarendon County about three hours earlier, and that the child seemed in good health. DMV, MPD ask Craig’s Used Cars’ customers to file complaints

thumb_Manning-SCPThe Manning Police Department has been inundated with complaints from customers of Craig’s Used Cars in Manning – and even from the sister store in Florence – after the Department of Motor Vehicles pulled the company’s license to sell on Tuesday.

Police said Wednesday afternoon that the DMV is asking customers to fill out a complaint – using this form – and then fax it or mail it back to the department. The address and fax number are on the form.

Residents receive phony call in new ‘Grandparents Scam’

WYBOO – Tuesday began just like any other morning for Kathleen and Thomas Wetherald.
Then, about 11 a.m., the couple received a phone call from their grandson. The young man told the couple that he was in Mexico on vacation, had gotten into some trouble and needed money for bail.

“We don’t have any grandchildren, because we don’t have any children,” Kathleen Wetherald said.

Police to assist Craig’s Used Cars’ customers without tags

Manning Police Chief Blair Shaffer said Tuesday that his staff will assist customers of Craig’s Used Cars who still do not have proper tags for vehicles sold within the last six months.

CRAIG'S-USED-CARS-3The state DMV started procedures on Tuesday to revoke the dealership’s license, effectively shutting down the store’s Manning operations. Owner Mike Dozier operates two other dealerships in Florence, Shaffer said, and was allegedly not providing proper vehicle tags for cars sold at the business during a six-month investigation by the Manning Police Department and the DMV.

LMA high school drama class putting on “Speed Date”

The Laurence Manning Academy high school drama class will present “Speed Date,” a one-act play by Janet Allard, at 7 p.m. May 2 in the Bubba Davis Gymnasium at Laurence Manning Academy. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for students. Tickets may be purchased ahead of time in both the lower and high school offices. Students participating in the play are also selling tickets, which may also be purchased at the door. The play features a colorful cast of “singles” who are ready to mingle at the local community center for a round of speed-dating.

DMV revokes Craig’s Used Cars’ license

The state Department of Motor Vehicles has revoked a local used car dealership’s license after a six-month investigation, according to Manning Police Chief Blair Shaffer.

craig's-used-cars-2Craig’s Used Cars – owned by Mike Dozier – has been allegedly failing to produce proper tags for cars sold to customers, Shaffer said.

“We started to notice cars running around town with expired paper tags (about six months ago),” Shaffer said on Tuesday. “We started stopping cars. From what we were finding out, (these customers) were given the run-around at Craig’s. They were coming up with all kinds of excuses.”
