Chapel AME Church hosting Gospel Jubilees

Chapel AME Church, McLeod Road in Paxville, will host the first night of the Gospel Jubilees of Sumter anniversary celebration at 6 p.m. Saturday at the church. Doors will open at 5 p.m. The second day will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Marvin Hodge Life Enrichment Center, 609 Miller Road in Sumter. Doors will open that day at 4 p.m. The Spiritual Caravans; Committed; and others are also on the program.

Backporch Players back with ‘Borderline Crazies’

It has been two years since the Backporch Players last brought their unique mixture of humor and vitality to the stage at Weldon Auditorium.   But from Friday through Sunday, the group will be back with “Borderline Crazies,” a play by Leo W. Mom, boyfriend charged in alleged child abuse case

The Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office filed charges against a man left alone with a 2-year-old girl on Tuesday who was later treated at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Andrew Billups is charged with attempted murder. The girl is still recovering at a Columbia hospital. Courtney Chamberlin, the child’s mother, has been charged with accessory after the fact to attempted murder. Maj. Kipp Coker said Thursday evening that deputies will also seek a warrant for unlawful neglect of a child. Billups, Chamberlin’s boyfriend, told Clarendon County Sheriff’s deputies that he found the child unresponsive and in a “seizure-like” state about 7:30… Read the rest

Arrests made in alleged child abuse case

The Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office has charged Andrew Billups with attempted murder in the case of a 2-year-old girl who is recovering in a Columbia hospital from internal injuries and head trauma. Therapist raising money for mission trip

Clarendon Memorial Hospital physical therapist Casey Amato is undertaking a medical mission trip to Nicaragua from May 10-18, and is asking the community to donate tennis shoes, walkers, canes, crutches, braces, slings and eyeglasses for the trip. LAKE CITY — Willie James Harrison, 71, died on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. Born Jan. 3, 1943, in Turbeville, he was a son of the late Sam and Pearl McDowell Harrison. The family will receive friends at the home of his brother and sister-in-law, George and Lillie Harrison, 823 N. Bethel Road in Scranton. Funeral services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

Dozens file breach of trust complaints against local dealership

The Manning Police Department confirmed late Wednesday that more than two dozen customers of Craig’s Used Cars have filed breach of trust complaints against the dealership, whose license was revoked on Tuesday by the state Department of Motor Vehicles after a six-month investigation. Manning Police Chief Blair Shaffer said the company – owned by Mike Dozier – has been allegedly failing to produce proper tags for cars sold to customers. craig's-used-cars-2Police said  the DMV is asking customers to fill out a complaint – using this form – and then fax it or mail it back to the department.
