Bagnal wins Summerton mayor’s race

Mac-BagnalDonald “Mac” Bagnal has been clear since the beginning of his campaign for Summerton mayor that he is just one person who will need the support of council members and the community.

He said Tuesday night that he is taking that view into his next four years in the mayor’s seat after handily defeating Summerton Town Councilman Terrance Tindal in a bid to replace outgoing Mayor Jay Bruner. Unofficial vote totals on Tuesday night had Bagnal well in the lead, with 165 votes to Tindal’s 81.

Votes are being certified at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Georgia wins third term on City Council

georgia-campaign-cards-1Manning City Councilwoman Diane Georgia defeated political newcomer Janice Reed Coney, winning her third term on council 128-90. Totals will be certified at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Georgia was first elected to City Council in 2006. She ran unopposed in 2010. She took the news of her victory emotionally on Tuesday, hugging many supporters at the Election Commission.One of those supporters was fellow Councilman Clayton Pack.

“I’m so proud of you,” Pack told a tearful Georgia repeatedly. “You did a wonderful job.”

Georgia was otherwise restrained regarding her win, telling The Manning Times that she “feels great.”

Wreck with no injuries at Corbett Road and Scott Avenue

Ruth Anderson Parker Coker Blake

Born Dec. 14, 1926, in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late Eddie Anderson and Hulda Barfield Anderson. She was a member of Journey Baptist Church.

MES fifth-graders travel to Washington, D.C.

The Manning Elementary School fifth-grade classes traveled just recently to Washington, D.C., for a couple of days of educational fun. Students visited the White House, the Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery and Mt. Vernon.

Main Street Manning to hold Egg Hunt

MSM-StackedMain Street Manning will hold an Easter Egg Hunt at 6 p.m. April 17 at Gibbons Street Park. Eggs will have surprises, and three age groups may participate: 3 and younger, 4-6 and 7-11. Deputies bust moonshine still

The Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Task Force announced Tuesday morning that deputies seized ingredients and equipment typically used in the manufacture of moonshine.

Capt. Ricky Richards said deputies seized 700 gallons of mash, capable of making up to 600 gallons of moonshine; 20 gallons of finished moonshine; a 200-gallon cooking pot; and 20 bags of corn.

“At about $50-60 a gallon, that’s about a $35,000 total street value possible from these materials,” Richards said.

Richards and Maj. Kipp Coker said the still was found near a home in the 1000 block of Oriole Place by employees of R&J Farm.Read the rest

Robert Lawton Arnette Sr.

KINGSTREE — Robert Lawton Arnette Sr., 79, widower of “Dottie” Dunford Arnette, died Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at his home in Columbia.

Born Aug. 5, 1934, in Kingstree, he was a son of the late Victor Lawton and Ruth Fitch Arnette. He was a graduate of Lake City High School, attended Furman University and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Mr. Arnette received his master’s degree from Louisiana State University. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was the retired president of The Exchange Bank of Kingstree. Voting for District 2 for Manning City Council will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Today at the Billie S. Fleming Protective Services Building on Boyce Street. Incumbent Diane Georgia is facing Janice Reed Coney. Voting is limited to District 2 residents only. Meanwhile, Summerton voters will choose between Terrance Tindal and Mac Bagnal for mayor there at Town Hall.

Windo Robert Curry

Windo Robert Curry, 78, husband of Mertie Hodge Strickland Curry, died Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Windo-Curry-001Born Nov. 6, 1935, in Pamplico, he was a son of the late Ander A. Curry and Dora Winne Johnson Curry. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from Santee Print Works.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include a stepdaughter, Patty (William Hugh) Epps of Alcolu; three grandchildren, Will (Kathryn) Epps and Nancy (Heyward) Moore, both of Manning, and McNeil (Megan) Epps of Greenville; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Tommy; and a sister, Wendy.

Arlen Road home invasion leads to shooting

investigationsA 37-year-old Manning man is recovering at Clarendon Memorial Hospital after a home invasion late Friday night led to the man being shot.

According to reports from the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office, Morasji R. Blanding was shot after two alleged intruders entered the home with handguns asking him and another 57-year-old occupant “where the money is.”

Maj. Kipp Coker said the Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the incident. No descriptions of the alleged perpetrators were given in reports. Please call (803) 435-4414 if you have any information regarding this incident.

Born in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Richard Allen Days and Lettie Johnson Days.

SUMMERTON – Marie David Jackson, 83, wife of Moses Jackson Sr., died Thursday, April 3 2014, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born Feb. 11, 1931, in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Selvin David and Annaliza Smith David Richburg.

The family will receive friends at the home, 3088 Wash Davis Road in Summerton.

JV Lady Saints defeat Andrew Jackson at home

fleur-de-lis-red-mdThe Clarendon Hall junior varsity girls softball team defeated Andrew Jackson 22-12 in five innings in Summerton on Friday. Bailey Connors led the offense, going 4-4. Sydney Wells was 2-2. Ava English, Devyn Royce and Glenda Kay Broadway each had two hits. Broadway was the winning pitcher.
