Alleged moonshine suspect posts bond

A 33-year-old Manning man charged April 14 for his alleged role in a moonshine distillery in Jordan has posted a $1,000 personal recognizance bond to be released. Harold Anthony James of 2155 Alex Harvin Highway in Manning posted bond shortly after his arrest, but the information did not become available on the Clarendon County Public Court Index until recently. James was charged with unlawful manufacture, transfer or possession of a distillery, first offense, a few days after Clarendon County Sheriff's deputies seized materials typically associated with the manufacture of illegal alcohol.

Capt. Ricky Richards said deputies seized 700 gallons of mash, capable of making up to 600 gallons of moonshine; 20 gallons of finished moonshine; a 200-gallon cooking pot; and 20 bags of corn.

“At about $50-60 a gallon, that’s about a $35,000 total street value possible from these materials,” Richards said.

Richards and Maj. Kipp Coker said the still was found near a home in the 1000 block of Oriole Place by employees of R&J Farm.

“They called us, and we found a trail from the still to a house,” Richards said “we got a search warrant for the home. No one lives there.”

James faces up to a $600 fine or six months in prison, if convicted.
