A controlled brush fire got out of control.
Shortly before noon Thursday, Samuel Moorer called 911 when a fire he and his father Samuel Jackson set got whipped up by the winds into the pine trees.
“It got out of control and I got scared,” Moorer, 39, said.
The fire quickly spread from the trees and into a small house and single-wide mobile home that belonged to his grandmother Mariah Jackson, who passed away in 1991. Both of the structures just off Tobias Road were rotten, Moorer said, and it didn’t take long to burn to the ground.
Moorer said the winds were calm when he and his father started the fire.
Capt. Michael Johnson said the Clarendon County Fire Department got the call about 11:50 a.m. and Chief Frances Richbourg said the structures were fully involved with fire when units responded.
The fire completely destroyed both structures.
