Festival kicks off early Saturday with Run/Walk

Don't forget to stretch those hamstrings. The Striped Bass Festival's 5K Run/5K Walk/1 Mile Fun Walk is slated for Saturday morning at Manning Primary School, 125 N. Boundary Street. The race is really a 3.5K run, in celebration of the festival's 35th year, according to Chamber of Commerce President Ryan Way. "The race will be held rain or shine," said Dawn Griffith, executive director of the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce, which is sponsoring the festival. The course starts at the school – plenty of parking is available – and ends near the courthouse. Eighty-two people ran in the race in 2013, Griffith said, and she'd like to see just as many this year, and hopefully more. On-site registration starts at 7:15 a.m. and goes to 8 a.m. Participants can also register at The Zone or the chamber prior to Saturday. The 5K/Run or Walk starts at 8:15 a.m. and the 1-mile fun walk kicks off at 8:20 a.m. If you're a parent with a child in a stroller, feel free to join in, Griffith said, or grab a leash and bring your dog. Or both. It's just a mile. Race packets can be picked up at the chamber on Friday before race day or at the starting line on the day of the race. Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers. Though there are several races in the region being held on Saturday, Griffith urges all area runners and walkers to come out and join the fun. All participants get a T-shirt and refreshments will be provided. Get some fresh air, get some exercise, get a new T-shirt and maybe make some new friends. For more information, call (803) 435-4405.
