Pinewood Baptist revival

Pinewood Baptist Church, S.C. 261 in Pinewood, will have Spring Revival Services from Sunday through Wednesday, with Sunday services at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.; and services Monday through Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Rev. Kirk Carlisle will be the guest speaker. Dinner will be served at 5:45 p.m. Monday through Wednesday prior to services. In addition to special music guests nightly, a nursery will be provided for all services. It started off chilly but it’s warming up.

Temperatures should reach the mid 60s this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. We’ll have winds out of the south at 8 to 13 mph and temps will dip into the mid 40s once the sun goes down.

Tomorrow should be even warmer and sunnier with temps reaching the mid 70s. There is some rain in the forecast so enjoy the outdoors while ye may.

 


Coker: Suspect ‘backed himself into a corner’

Justin Jermaine Johnson is facing many charges in connection with the April 6, 2011, shooting deaths of his 9-month-old son, Jayden, and Maxine Caraway, 59.

He backed himself into a corner.

That’s what Maj. Kipp Coker told jurors that Justin Jermaine Johnson did after he “snapped” during an 8-hour interrogation when Johnson hit the table in an uproar during questions about his deceased son.

“It startled me,” Coker testified on Thursday at the Clarendon County Administration building. “He calmed down and sat back down. Obviously I struck a nerve.”

Starflo to invest $1 million, create 12 new jobs

Starflo Corporation, a manufacturer of industrial valves, will break ground on a new distribution center as part of an expansion in the Clarendon County Industrial Park. The move is a $1 million investment that should generate about 12 new jobs, according to the office of Gov. Nikki Haley. This will double Starflo’s distribution center capacity while bringing online new equipment for the Manning manufacturing shop to increase machining capacity and efficiency.

LMA varsity and JV girls defeat Monarchs

LMA ShieldThe Laurence Manning Academy girls teams were both victorious against Manning High School’s teams on Thursday night. The JV girls team had a final score of 27-2 against the JV Monarchs, bringing their record to 7-0 on the season. Brooke Ward was the winning pitcher, with seven strikeouts. Sara Herbert was 5-6 with three doubles. Sarah Knight Nalley was 3-4 with two doubles. Ellen Dinkins was 2-3. Lundee Olsen was 3-3 with three doubles. They play again Saturday in a Sumter tournament. The Lady Saints beat the Lady Monarchs 23-0, and Dakota Jackson was the winning pitcher.

 


Jurors watch tearful confession in double murder trial

Jurors on Thursday watched the April 6, 2011, videotaped confession of a 24-year-old Summerton man charged with shooting and killing his 9-month old son, Jayden, and the 59-year-old grandmother of his ex-girlfriend.

Prosecutors played for jurors the eight-hour interrogation of Justin Jermaine Johnson, but did so in segments, with the most intense portion coming late in the afternoon.

“Whether intentional or not, I did it,” Johnson told Maj. Kipp Coker of the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office and former deputy Mason Moore.

Robert McFadden to run for House District 64 as a Republican

robert_mcfadden Clarendon NAACP President Robert McFadden announced intentions tonight at the Clarendon County Republican Party meeting to run as a Republican in the House District 64 primary in June. He wants the seat currently occupied by Rep. Robert “Bobby” Ridgeway, a Democrat.

 


Collision with injuries at Black River and Perlane roads in New Zion

The S.C. Highway Patrol is currently responding to a vehicle wreck with injuries at Black River and Perlane roads in New Zion. Traffic may slow during this time. The wreck occurred about 5:25 p.m. Thursday.


Manning High reopens courts

Manning High School rededicated its tennis courts today to Silver native and two-time Wimbledon champion Althea Gibson. The courts were refurbished prior to the opening of this season, and Coach Kay Young said it was a needed improvement.

Essie Dingle Stukes Cantey

Essie Dingle Stukes Cantey, widow of Rufus Stukes Sr. and Alvin Cantey, died Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Windsor Manor Nursing Facility in Silver.

Born July 10, 1923, she was a daughter of the late William Dingle and Victoria Ballard Dingle. Essie was a devoted member of Antioch Baptist Church in Manning.

Survivors include 18 children; two brothers; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Wednesday in the chapel of Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today at Antioch Baptist Church, 2571 Joseph Lemon Dingle Road in Manning. Words of consolation will be … Read the rest

Martha WhiteGREELEYVILLE – Martha Ann McDonald White, 75, wife of Julius Carlisle White, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Williamsburg Hospital.

Born Dec. 8, 1938, in Georgetown County, she was a daughter of the late Johnnie Winfield McDonald and Mabel McDonald. She was a member of Greeleyville Baptist Church.

LMA has school Monday

As a result of the ice storms and the cancelation of school for several days, Laurence Manning Academy will hold school on Monday. That day was scheduled as a weather makeup day on the school’s 2013-14 calendar. It will be a regular school and, and buses will run on their regular schedule.

Ann Bradford MP (2)SANTEE – Annie Laura Metcalf Bradford, 87, widow of Arthur Clifford Bradford, died Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility.

Born June 19, 1926, in Woodbury, Ga., she was a daughter of the late John David Metcalf and Bessie Mae Bridges Long. She was a member of the Santee Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and Woodmen of the World.
