Mayor: Witherspoon frequently 'voice of reason' on council

Manning Mayor Julia Nelson said Thursday afternoon that Manning Councilman Gregory Witherspoon always had the voice of reason around the table. Witherspoon passed away earlier today after an extended illness in hospice care. "He spoke few words but when he spoke, his thoughts were purposeful and carried much weight in our decision-making," Nelson said. "He was familiar with the history and operations and could recall the rationale and thoughts that went into past decisions." "He took his oath of office seriously and always made sure the decisions rendered were in the best interest of our city," Nelson continued. "He will truly be missed, and will be remembered as an intricate leader in the city's current and future success."
