Robinson grills Coker during fourth day of Johnson trial

Clarendon Public Defender Scott Robinson grilled Maj. Kipp Coker of the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office on Friday morning during the fourth day of testimony in the double murder trial of Justin Jermaine Johnson. Throughout his cross-examination, Robinson accused Coker of buildingĀ a case on "BS," pointing to Coker's continued fabrication of supposed evidence throughout an eight-hour interrogation of Johnson. "I said what I said to get a reaction," Coker said repeatedly. "We say things during interviews to get a reaction, and then we go from there." "You mean interrogation?" Robinson asked. "I prefer the term 'interview,'" Coker interjected. "I bet you do," Robinson said. Coker testified that interview techniques allow investigators to tell a suspect they have evidence that they may not really have. Coker admitted that much of what he told Johnson was untrue - like a ring that fell from Johnson's finger during the incident would be his undoing. Coker said, however, that Johnson's story of a "guy named Robert" committing the murder of Maxine Caraway, 59, and Johnson's 9-month-old son Jayden on April 6, 2011, just didn't add up. The trial will continue at 9:30 a.m. Monday in council chambers at the Clarendon County Administration Building.
