Mingo Tanner featured speaker at First Baptist luncheon

Hemingway resident Vernon Tanner – known as Mingo Vernon Tanner – will be the guest speaker at the First Baptist Church of Manning’s Senior Luncheon, which will be held March 18 in the church’s fellowship hall, 49 W. Boyce St.

Tanner is the first American Indian to be appointed by the governor and approved by the State Senate to represent all Native Americans in South Carolina since Colonial times.

He presents Native American Educational Programs across the state to civic groups, churches, scout troops, YMCA groups and libraries. He is also a lay speaker and elder of Indiantown Presbyterian Church, which is a sacred site for the Chickasaw Tribe of South Carolina.

He teaches his heritage with humor and hands-on experiences of the customs and traditions of his ancestors.
