New Covenant services canceled Wednesday

New Covenant Presbyterian Church’s elders have canceled all Wednesday activities due to impending inclement weather. The church will not have its Wednesday after-school program, with no meal or Bible study following. There will be no youth activities or session meeting. The Sweetheart Banquet scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today will still be held.

 


Library to close early Tuesday

The Harvin Clarendon County Library will close at 5:30 p.m. today due to impending inclement weather. The library will remain closed Wednesday. Decisions about reopening Thursday will be made Wednesday.

Clarendon School District 1 – Closed Wednesday and Thursday.

Clarendon School District 2 – Closed Wednesday and Thursday.

Clarendon School District 3 – Closed Wednesday and Thursday.

Dorn VA Medical gets new chief of staff

dr. bernardCOLUMBIA – Dr. Bernard L. DeKoning has been announced as the new chief of staff of Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.

 

“Dr. DeKoning brings a wealth of experience as a senior healthcare professional,” said Interim Director Maria Andrews during an announcement on Feb. 4. “We are looking forward to his leadership of our clinical programs.”

Samuels Funeral Home LLC handling services for Maurice Conyers

Funeral services for Maurice Jeffery Conyers will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home of Manning.

Conyers, 23, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, in Manning.

Born Feb. 28, 1990, in Manning, he was a son of Unie James and Mashell Conyers.

The family will receive friends at the home of his aunt, Donna Conyers, 1947 Paddock Road in Manning.


LMA B-Team games moved up today

The Laurence Manning Academy B-Team basketball games will be moved up to 4 and 5 p.m. today. If there are any further changes due to weather, the school will notify manninglive.com. Games scheduled for Wednesday have been canceled entirely and will not be rescheduled.

Athletic Director Ritchie Way has announced that Clarendon Hall will postpone its games scheduled for Tuesday. He said Wednesday is “not looking good either.”

It should mix with rain in the afternoon. Significant icing is possible. Temps will be nearly steady and in the low 30s. Winds will be NE at 10 to 20 mph.

John Arthur McGriff Sr.

John Arthur McGriff Sr., 82, widower of Bessie Mallett McGriff, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born April 1, 1931, in Tallahassee, Fla., he was a son of the late Johnnie McGriff and Arthur Lee Davis McGriff.

The family will receive friends at the home, 2061 Bloomville Road in Manning.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.


UPDATE: Manning man dead, 2 suspects denied bond

Joseph Tindal, 38, of 1156 High Hills Lane in Manning, and Eddie Lee Hilton, 40, of 1122 High Hills Lane, were denied bond on murder charges late Monday afternoon. Hilton has been specifically charged with accessory after the fact to murder.

The men were charged Monday morning in the shooting death of Maurice Conyers, 23, who died from an apparent gunshot wound to the head late Sunday night.

Conyers was found in the front yard of a home in the 1200 block of High Hills Lane about 10:06 p.m. Sunday with “a large crowd of people around,” according to reports.… Read the rest

Those named to the President’s List include Stephen Patrick of Gable, a biochemistry major; Roy Belser of Pinewood, a biological sciences major; and Whitney Thigpen of Turbeville, a health sciences major. Students must earn a 4.0 GPA – all A’s – to be named to the President’s List.

Manning man dead, two suspects in custody

Two Manning men are in custody after a 23-year-old man was shot and killed late Sunday night, according to the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office.

Clarendon County Coroner Hayes Samuels said Monday that Maurice Jeffery Conyers, 23, of 1998 Paddock Road in Manning, died of an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

“He will be going for a post-mortem examination in Charleston at 9 a.m. Tuesday,” Samuels said. “It looks like a gunshot wound to the head will be the cause, but we will know for sure tomorrow.”
