Marie Richardson Lewis, widow of James Lewis, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at her home, surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Born and raised in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Johnnie and Lula James Richardson. She attended Clarendon County public schools and Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church as a child. As a young adult, Marie eventually moved to New York, where she settled and raised a family.

While living in New York, she was a devoted member of Bethany Baptist Church, where she served as the president of the usher board. Marie organized and was the president of the Angelo Gospel Singers that traveled and sang regularly for many years. After Marie and her husband retired, they returned to Summerton, where she reconnected with Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church in Pinewood.

Survivors include a son, Jamal Rashid of New York, N.Y.; four daughters, Marie “Cookie” Tate, Mildred Jones and Helen Lewis, all of New York, and Juanita Fuller of Atlanta; 12 grandchildren; more than 50 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church in the River Road community of Pinewood, with the Rev. Daniel Green, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

The family received friends at the home, 1983 Lula Road in Summerton.
