ROSLYN, N.Y. — Lorraine Paylor-Conyers, 69, wife of Henry Conyers, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital, Roslyn.
Born June 28, 1944, in New York, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Epsie Malloy Sampson. She attended schools in the New York City Public School System. She received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from John Jay College. She was employed as a narcotics correctional officer at New York State Narcotics Addition Control Commission.
Later, she was employed by the New York State Department Correctional Service as a correctional officer and was the first black female to be promoted to sergeant at Attica Correctional Facility.
She was also employed at Edgecomb Rehab Center, Green Haven, Parkside, Queensboro and Sing Sing. She was an ordained minister by the House of David Ministries. She also served as an actress in the drama ministry, and as a ministry and choir member at her church, Calvary Tabernacle.
Survivors besides her husband include a daughter, Kenneeda (Robert A.) Taylor-Sidberry; two grandchildren, Robert K. and Monique Jasmine-Epsie Sidberry; a brother, Lewis Sampson Jr.; a sister, Nona Hilliard; a brother-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and a great-aunt.
Celebratory services will be held 1 p.m. today at Spring Hill AME Church, 4309 Bill Davis Road in Summerton, with the Rev. Emma J. Mellerson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the family home, 1420 Oliver James Road in Summerton.
These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.
