SOLICITOR FILES NEW PAPERWORK IN STINNEY CASE

Third Circuit Solicitor Ernest “Chip” Finney III has filed new paperwork in the George Stinney Jr. case, alleging that the 15-year-old boy’s murder conviction and execution is not affected by an old point of English common law the boy's attorneys attempted to use nearly two weeks ago in a Sumter courtroom.

Fourteenth Circuit Court Judge Carmen T. Mullen gave Finney and his team 10 days to file a brief on the writ of coram nobis, an old remedy used to "correct errors of fact when no other remedy exists," according to attorney Miller Shealy. Finney filed paperwork on Friday with the Sumter Clerk of Court saying the writ is obsolete, and that he is unsure it still exists under state law.
