DOT NAMES HIGHWAY FOR FALLEN PATROLMAN

SUMMERTON – The portion of U.S. 15 South that now bears the name of a highway patrolman is about nine miles away from the spot where he was killed more than 50 years ago in a head-on collision.

John Ray Riddle had been assigned by the South Carolina Highway Patrol to the Summerton area for less than nine months. Just two weeks before his death, he discovered he was going to be a father.

Fifty-three years later, his son said having a stretch of Clarendon County road named after his dad is a special thing for his family.
