OLANTA — Buena McIntosh Kirby, 81, widow of Arthur Kirby, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at 464 N. Jones Road in Olanta.

 

Born Oct. 16, 1932, in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Lucretia Rush McIntosh. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She was employed with Florence County School District 3 for 31 years. She and her husband owned and operated Olanta Motel.

 

In her youth, she joined Oak Grove AME Church. After marriage, she joined Emwell Freewill Baptist Church in Olanta.

 

Survivors include two sons, Charles Kirby and Elbert “Dick” (Wanda) Kirby, both of Olanta; a daughter, Voncile “Sue” Kirby of Olanta; four grandchildren, Theresa (Randel) Williams, Arthur “Boss” (Melinda) Moore, Tinesia McKenzie and Justin Holmes; five sisters, Margaret McFadden of Lake City, Dr. Emma (Roger) Owens and Berthenia Wiggins, both of Mauldin, Pearl (Charles) Graham of Florence and Betty King of Norfolk, Va.; two additional sisters-in-law; an additional brother-in-law; and six great-grandchildren.

 

Eastern Star Rites were held Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Hayes F. & LaNelle J. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St. in Manning.

 

Celebratory services were held Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at Emwell Freewill Baptist Church, 3050 Emwell Road in Lynchburg, with Elder Oneal Graham, pastor, officiating, the Rev. I.J. Myers presiding and the Rev. Ernest W. Frierson assisting. Burial followed in St. Mark Cemetery.

 

The family received friends at 464 N. Jones Road in Olanta.
